The world’s oldest tropical rainforest

Taman Negara is the world’s oldest tropical rainforest and has been a national park since 1938 when it was named King George V National Park until Malaysia gained independence. The park is huge, encompassing three separate states and a total area of over 4000 square kilometres. Taman Negara is home to a vast range of wildlife from tigers to rhinos to exotic birds, but for the average visitor, long tail monkeys, ants and lizards are probably all that you will see.

I made my way to Jerantut from which there are …

Cameron Highlands

The Cameron Highlands sit high above the rest of peninsular Malaysia in a cool calm that is a welcome break from the Asian heat. Scones and jam, tea plantations and strawberry farms all hint towards the British past. Most of the towns are a bit on the over developed side with large hotels, golf courses, starbucks and KFC all having a presence, but just beyond the town limits lies a jungle waiting to be explored.
Tanah Rata is probably the best places to use as a base in the Cameron Highlands …

Railay may be over crowded, but it offers views of undeniably beautiful sunsets from the main beach.

Around the world – the highlights part 2

Its hard to believe that I am already 6 months into my year long around the world adventure. I have had so many amazing experiences, met some great people and had a hell of a lot of fun along the way. By the end of February I will have spent 2 months in Africa and 5 months in Asia. Admittedly a lot of my journey so far has been a highlights trip, with flying visits in many places, but I have always been of the mind set that if I …

Climbing in Railay

Let me start by saying Railay is a shit hole. Never have I been more disappointed by a place. There are two main areas. One filled with expensive resorts and the other with budget accommodation and restaurants. The latter side smells like a sewer and when the tide is out the beach is exposed as a rubbish tip. It is disgusting. Although the other side does have a stunning beach with cliffs enclosing the bay, it is always mobbed. I don’t like spending time lying on the beach at the …

Koh Lanta

While backpacking in Thailand I went to Krabi. Krabi is simply a jump off point to the islands and beaches that are nearby namely Koh Lanta, Koh Phi Phi and Railay. Railay is popular with climbers while Koh Lanta and Koh Phi Phi are famed for their beautiful beaches. The film The Beach made Koh Phi Phi popular, but it is what lies under the water that drew me to it. I wanted to dive.
Whilst in Railay I investigated options for diving at nearby Koh Phi Phi but there wasn’t …

Khao Sok National Park

After the lack of trekking on the Chiang Mai trek I was determined to get a good amount of walking done at Khao Sok National Park. The park has two well marked trails which lead to a series of waterfalls. The first is around 7km long whilst the second is closer to 14km. If you only plan to walk these trails, there is absolutely no need to hire a guide. Guides are however available to take you off the beaten path and deeper into the jungle.
To enter Khao Sok a …

Photos from China

I have fallen way behind on getting my photos online. I have only just finished uploading my China photos. Amongst them you will find photos from Tiger Leaping Gorge, the Great Wall of China, Terracotta warriors and the Chengdu Panda research and breeding centre.
