Abel Tasman Skydive

27 March 2010 6 Comments

Today I turned 28 so to celebrate I decided that the best thing to do would be to throw myself out of a plane. Packed tightly into the tiny plane we climbed up to a height of 13,000 feet where the door was flung open and Scruffy (my instructor) slid us towards the exit. After a few seconds of posing for the camera on the wing Scruffy rolled us over the edge and we started to free fall. Unlike a bungee jump or a roller coaster you don’t get the feeling of g-force, I just felt like I was floating. After almost a minute of waving at the camera man Scruffy pulled the parachute cord and our descent slowed right down. I now had time to really appreciate the scenery. My skydive was over Abel Tasman National Park on the south island of New Zealand. Mountains, beaches, forest and the ocean provided for perfect views. After determining that I didn’t suffer from motion sickness, Scruffy span us around a few times so that I could get a full 360 degree view from the air and then we made our way towards the landing strip. Sky diving isn’t the cheapest of activities but its definitely one of the most exhilarating.

After I went skydiving for the first time I was seeing it in my dreams for weeks after. Expensive like you say but one of the most fun things I've ever done.

Awesome jump – love that you got the video. It made my palms sweat and reminded me of my jump in 2003. I think yours went more smoothly – I'm pretty sure I blacked out as soon as we jumped. I came to and we were rolling with our drone chute wrapped around us. My tandem guide got it figured out and the rest was fantastic. I must have blown a fuse.
