Sleeper bus to Vientiane
I left Don Det on boxing day and had yet another day of eventful travel. A packed longtail boat to the mainland and then onto a minibus that broke down straight away. Eventually we got to Pakse where I had five hours to kill before my first experience of sleeper buses in Laos. Sleeper buses in China and Vietnam were very difficult to sleep on, not only due to the crazy driving but the fact that the beds were both too short and too narrow. When I got on the sleeper bus from Pakse to Vientiane I was pleasantly surprised to find a nice big bed. I climbed in and couldn’t believe how much room I had. It was still a bit short but was pretty wide. I was happy with my choice of the VIP bus, I was happy until an American guy appeared and climbed in next to me. It was a double bed. Why would anyone think putting double beds on a sleeper bus was a good idea? I know its to save space and get more people on board, but I definitely prefer the narrow, short boxes that the buses in China and Vietnam have.

Did you end up having to share the bed with a stranger, then? That's amusing. Maybe it was intended for couples traveling together.
Haha, I was wondering about how the double beds work. My husband and I travel together and i have always wondered about solo travelers. Now I have my answer. Sorry to hear about having to share. Buses have come a long way since our experience in Laos. 5 years ago we took a 24 hour bus ride from Hanoi with 5 other travelers, boxes of lobster and a tonne of rice and produce. We were sleeping on the sacks of rice using them as pillows.
