Photo of the week – Marble Boat

Marble boat at the summer palace

Like most of the Summer Palace, the lakeside pavillion which is now known as the Marble Boat was destroyed by Anglo-French during the second opium war. Almost every building in Beijing’s Summer Palace has since been restored and has a plaque noting the fact that it was destroyed over drugs. As I stood taking photos and admiring the detail that has gone into it I overheard an American asking his tour guide “Did they ever use it for trips on the lake?”.
