Hong Kong Goldfish Market
Walking around the Kowloon area of Hong Kong I stumbled across the first market that actually grabbed my attention and not in a good way. On both sides of the street were bags of fish, small fish and large fish alike were all hanging in freezer bags with their prices marked on them. Goldfish, clown fish, angel fish and bigger fish that I don’t know the names of, just that they barely fitted inside the bags, they were all up for grabs.
Further down the street I could hear dogs yelping from the cages that they were crammed into, rabbits were climbing over each other in their tight confines and buckets of turtles sat on the side of the pavement. Further down the street I found cages of kittens, again overcrowded and fighting with each other.
Usually I walk straight passed markets as I’m not interested in shopping and most sell the same things anyway, but I couldn’t help but take notice at the goldfish market. I was appalled by the conditions the animals were kept in, it surely can’t be good for them.

Have you been to the Chatuchak Weekend Market in Bangkok? They sell everything there but also have a huge section for animals. I know what you mean when it comes to the conditions, esp animals like the cats and dogs. Once they get to old and are not cut anymore, they just pitch them out on the street to fend for themselves. One no longer had to wonder why there are so many stray cats and dogs in BKK.
The bad thing is you can even find endangered animals there. Now they keep them hidden in the back of the stores because so many reporters did stories on it and made the Thai's look bad. But you can still find them and just don't have your camera out when you ask. I'm surprised you even got many pictures because at places like that, they freak out if you got a camera.
The link to the market is below for reference.

Ah, you should've seen the ones in Turkey…
Dead animals in cages and stuff. Nice!
Woo, spam filter. Why do I bother?
I too was appalled about how they kept the animals in the markets and pet shops in Hong Kong, but it's nothing compared to the mainland of China unfortunately
