Whale spotting on the way to Zanzibar

whale spotting on the ferry to Zanzibar

Escaping the heat of the lower deck on the ferry from Dar es Salaam to Zanzibar I perched myself on top of a pile of rucksacks on the upper deck. The front of the boat was full as many others had the same idea. Glad that my rucksack wasn’t being sat upon and hoping that there was nothing breakable in the rucksack below me, the fresh sea air was a welcome break from the heat and sweaty smell from below.

The two hour crossing was sped up by some unexpected sea life. Firstly a couple of dolphins were swimming along side the ferry, jumping out of the water as we passed, and later a couple of whales could be seen in the distance, blowing water from their blowholes and thrashing their tails resulting in large sprays of water. I had been considering going on a dolphin boat trip the following day, but after seeing them for free from the ferry I decided to pass on the boat trip.

The return ferry crossing is notoriously rough so in preparation I purchased some sea sickness tablets in Dar. Although choppy, neither crosing was bad enough to result in any of our group being sick, but we did see a number of other people walking around with new smelly patterns on their shirts.

Wow sounds excellent – you've got me in the mood Dan. Soon I'll be off to watch the dolphins and hopefully whales in Bais on Negros Oriental. Can't wait. Great posts by the way. I really loved the Mara pix – so I gave you a shout out this afternoon :)

    Have fun…:)
