 Time for some beach action

After a hectic start to the African tour, a few days of relaxing on the beach has been very welcome. Firstly at Dar es Salaam where it was warm enough to sleep outside with just a mosquito net, and then at Kendwa Rocks in northern Zanzibar where we all had a break from camping as we stayed in little huts just off the beach. The huts were no more than a space to sleep, some people were expecting more, but I was quite content to get a proper bed for a couple of nights. I’m not really a fan of lying on the beach, I get restless very quickly, so I set out to find some activities to keep myself busy.

Jellyfish weren’t what I was expecting to see when I decided to go snorkelling. I could see them through the mask, hear them buzz and feel them sting as I swam passed them. Zebra fish and clown fish were more welcome but apart from them I didn’t see much as the visibility was pretty poor. The jellyfish stings were thankfully ok after a shower, so I wasn’t put off going back in the water the following day.

Kayaking seemed like a great idea to get a bit of exercise so four of us set out to reach a small island with two two-man kayaks. Two hours seemed like plenty of time to reach the small island and get back, but we hadn’t counted on there being such a strong current. We zigzagged our way across, at times going in circles, wondering whether it was our paddling technique or the current that was making us constantly go off course.
