How many ways can we break down on safari?

Getting a flat whilst in the Masai Mara was only the beginning. In total I think there were a total of 12 breakdowns
between 6 vehicles whilst in the Masai Mara, Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater over 6 days. The roads for the most part are dirt tracks, full of rocks and pot holes, so the vehicles really do take a pounding.

In the Masai Mara we used 9 seater mini buses. These seemed to be the most popular choice amongst the safari companies as the same model could be seen everywhere. Breakdowns amongst our tour group included flat tyres, suspensions falling off, exhausts falling down and engine problems.

Our safari jeeps in the Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater really did test everyone’s patience though. Not a day went by without at least two needing push started, either manually or being bumped by another jeep. The problem was that only one of the batteries from the three jeeps worked consistently. This meant that at the start of each day that one battery would be passed from jeep to jeep to get them going. Credit to the drivers though, they always managed to get them going again.
