The day everyone was fed
Vultures circling above a watering hole was a sure sign that something was either dying or dead. Our van span around and followed the tracks over at full speed. On arrival we weren’t disappointed. Trails of blood led us from the watering hole to a lion and his victim, a large buffalo, who he had attacked whilst it drank. The lion was guarding his kill in the bushes. A hiena cautiously dragged pieces of the buffalo away from the spot at which it was killed, fully aware that a lion was close by. Even the entrails were fought over. Vultures continued to swoop down to claim their share.
We were always a couple of hours too late to witness the actual kill. Lions hunt early morning and at night, so on our early morning game drive in the Masai Mara we were hopeful that we would see a kill. Lions were spotted, but we evidently weren’t early enough. I’ll be going on a night game drive somewhere further down the line, so maybe then.

Pretty cool you got to see some action. How close were you to the lions?
Great spotting Dan, vultures usually give us great clues about potential predators!
Was privileged enough to find a buffalo carcass this one time in the Timbavati. We were on foot with our guide when we suddenly saw two hooded vultures landing near the dry river bed. Went to check it out but there was nothing to be seen at the time…although the animal had clearly been killed by a BIG cat!
Later that day nevertheless, we went back with our land rover…and there it was; a HUGE 200 kg male lion! Extremely cool!
Anyway, great job! Keep us updated with your interesting spotting!
Keep well,
Michael
Oh wow! How amazing that you could be there and get such footage! Man oh man! It makes me ask "what am I doing with MY life". Geez. I usually watch stuff like this on National Geographic…and here you are "living" it. wow wow.
I found you on 20sb we love comments.
Have a wonderful day!
In the Masai Mara we were only a couple of feet from the lions. Same in the Ngorogo Crater actually, a whole pride was lying by the side of the road.
