Where to stay in Nairobi?

Where to stay in Nairobi

I arrive in Nairobi two days before the Kenya to Cape Town overland tour with Acacia Africa begins. I won’t arrive until after dark so I definitely want to have my accommodation arranged in advance.

A hotel has been recommended to me by Acacia Africa but its rather expensive compared to the accommodation I will be staying in for the rest of my around the world trip so I have been researching some budget alternatives. At the moment I am considering both Wildebeest Camp and Bush House. Both of these options are at least 5 times cheaper than the recommended hotel and have decent ratings on hostel review sites, they are however a bit outside the city centre. The distance is an issue because there is a pre-departure meeting the evening before the tour at the recommended hotel and the hotel is also the tour departure point. Taxis back and forth between my accommodation and the hotel is probably the most sensible option, from what I’ve found online, they won’t cost much.

Update: I’ve booked a bed in the dorm room at Wildebeest Camp for the two nights before the tour.

You could stay at the Lords of Cricket which is the Nairobi Gymkhana club…however as a member I need to sign you in. Let me know.

    cheers

I just did Acacia’s Nairobi-Jo-burg tour myself- and I too stayed at the Wildebeest Camp for a few nights rather than the hotel they recommended. It cost about 6-8 USD each way in a taxi from the hotle to the Wildebeest Camp. The trip is great- have a wonderful time.

im a kenyan native living in canada and i would just like to tell you that you will never truly see any part of africa if you do not explore it yourself. this dose not include a white tour group showing you animals. this is doing what the locals do. seeing what the locals see. and absolutly NOT trying to live like the locals. I grew up in a very well off family and would just encourage you to have fun and not be such a tourist. i practice this wherever i go be it italy, japan or down under.

That is a good point Joan. I lived in Nairobi for over 8 years and was able to do countless off the beaten path things in Kenya. Living like a local will truly accentuate anyone's travels.

I usually stay with friends in Nairobi, but when we use to party sometimes we would end up crashing at Impala Hotel which is right in Westlands opposite Holiday Inn. You can cram more than a few people in the decent rooms that are quite cheap. It is also in a fabulous, safe location.

Hope you had some wonderful experiences in Africa!
