Received a visa for Vietnam
My passport was returned to me in the post this morning complete with a visa for Vietnam, the final visa that I needed to obtain before departure. I wasn’t expecting to receive it until next week as I only posted it on the 20th so another fast turn around. Its valid between November 15th and December 15th so I’ve got a bit of flexibility with my time there.
In other Vietnam related news, Lindsay has booked her flights! She will be joining me for six weeks to travel in Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos and Thailand.

Rocking! Ive been to Vietnam over a dozen times (family live there). Tons of places to recommend! Which part of VN will you be in? I’ve never been up north, we are from the south and I’ve only gone as far as central. Hopefully I can take my friends there oneday.
your trip sounds pretty friggin’ awesome! I wish I had money to go to all those places! I need to read up on more of what you are doing, but are you doing it budget way or luxury or both?
my friend was HS did something similar but very budget, this blog got purchased by Gadling but you can find it here. http://www.gadling.com/category/life-nomadic/. Maybe it will help you with your journeys.
My plan is to travel from north to south, entering at the border with China and exiting into Cambodia. Its all going to be on a very low budget, staying at hostels and eating cheaply. I’ll check out your friend’s blog. Thanks.
Vietnam…I’d love to go there. I think it’d be really interesting!
Fellow traveller clocking in…!
Nice to see the amount of preparation you’re doing. I normally do it in 2-3 week stints, and then come back home. I’m also a freelance so I can get away with it! A whole year though… awesome!
Might want to go and get the ‘Subscribe to Comments’ WordPress plug-in, also! (I love subscribing to comments, as I always hope the blogger will respond!)
Good shout, I’ll add it later.
Ahh, super jealous that you get to travel. I’d adore doing that. I’m a school teacher in US and don’t even have a passport.
Hi, I just found your blog via 20sb…what a FABULOUS adventure!! I’ve got a major case of wanderlust so I’ll be looking forward to hearing more about your trip!
Exciting! I’m not a big world traveller, but I’ve loved what I’ve done/seen!
One of my best friends studied abroad in Vietnam when she was in college. She got some amazing stories and pictures. Have a great time!
Hey, when you’re in Vietnam if you want to do some diving go to Nha Trang. Pretty good and fairly cheap. I see you’re going to Malaysia as well so make sure you get to the Perhentian Islands as they are gorgeous! Very little nightlife (bring your own booze as they pretty much only had beer while I was there) but the sealife and wildlife is brilliant and the beach is pure white sand. Diving there is phenomenal and the best I saw in all of Asia and Oz. Mind you, I went diving on the Great Barrier reef after a big storm so couldn’t see a thing! Luang Prabang in Laos is cool as well and worth a few days. Also in Vietnam its well worth going into the mountains up north, it was my favourite place there. Fun as well to spend a few days on the old clipper boats around the coast there. There’s still loads of hill tribes in the mountains with really traditional lifestyles. If you’re up for mountain biking around there it’s supposed to be great. In Cambodia we stayed in a really nice hostel called Smiley’s when we went to visit Angkor Wat. If I think of any more places to visit I’ll try to let you know!
Thanks for the tips. Have a look at my plans for Cambodia, Malaysia, Thailand and Vietnam.
