Tips from the back seat of the bus
I spent the bank holiday weekend in London visting friends and enjoying lots of skating, a bit of roller hockey, too much alcohol and plenty of sunshine. The cheapest way of travelling between London and Glasgow was by bus, so on Wednesday night I boarded the sleeper bus to make the 8 hour journey.
I bought a copy of the June/July issue of Wanderlust to read on the bus as it has a feature on Indochina, covering lesser known destinations and itineraries for Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam. The majority of the destinations featured I had read about previously and many of them already feature in my plans, but the timescales suggested for their itineraries was reassuring as my own estimates aren’t far off them.
As I was reading the magazine the guy sitting next to me noticed the feature. He had spent several months in Laos and Cambodia last year, as had another passenger sitting in the back row with us. Between them I’ve now got a long list of places to read up on which weren’t included in the magazine feature and recommendations for the best ways to travel in those countries.
I didn’t get much sleep on that long bus journey but I did come away with some very useful information.

during your adventure, I feel you will – as I have – come to fall in love with the people you meet “in the back of the bus.”
I run a regular column on my blog called “Adventures in the Back of the Bus” about all the people I meet traveling by bus inside Taiwan and in other countries I visit.
Great stuff. Gotta love good, free, firsthand advice.
I like your “Adventures in the Back of the Bus” posts.
Damn, I miss that magazine!
