Itinerary for Vietnam
Following China I will be travelling south to Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, Thailand, Malayasia and Singapore. All over land using buses, trains, boats, and whatever other forms of transport are available. In Vietnam I will mainly be travelling by bus and train but to get to Cambodia I’ll be taking a boat along the river from Chau Doc to Phnom Penh.
From China I am planning to enter Vietnam in the north at the Hekou/Lao Cai border which I will get to with a bus from Kunming. My first port of call in Vietnam will be Sapa for a couple of days of trekking in the mountains. After Sapa I will travel to the capital, Hanoi, followed by Ha Long Bay. A cruise of Ha Long Bay is an absolute must to see the limestone pillars formed by all the islands. I wonder if I’ll encounter Guybrush Threepwood on Monkey Island?
From Ha Long Bay I will be travelling south all the way to the Mekong Delta visiting Hue, Da Nang, Marble Mountains, Hoi An, and Ho Chi Minh City/Saigon on the way. Kitesurfing at Mui Ne is also an option, I can’t wait to complete the IKO course so that I can hire equipment unsupervised. In Ho Chi Minh City, a visit to the Cu Chi Tunnels is a must. The tunnel complex was used by the Viet Cong guerrillas during the Vietnam War as hiding spots during combat, as well as serving as communication and supply routes, hospitals, food and weapon caches and living quarters for numerous guerrilla fighters.
The last stop in Vietnam will be Chau Doc to get the boat to Cambodia.
