Travel photos

27 March 2009 2 Comments

I was originally planning to plot my photos on a map using the Google Maps API and geotags on my photos accessed via the Flickr API, but that would have required me to purchase a GPS data logger and always have that charged along with my camera and laptop. It would also have been a bit more complicated than simply uploading photos as the photos would need to have geotags added to them by matching their timestamps with the timestamps in the GPS data. The data logger which I was thinking of buying was the QStarz BT-Q1000.

Now that the mapping plan has gone, I have spent some time this week developing a gallery for my travel photos. It displays all of my photos by continent, country and destination and currently includes photos that I have taken on previous trips. The idea is that as I progress on my trip and upload photos, the gallery will expand to include more continents and countries automagically. The gallery is written in php and makes use of the flickr API to retrieve information on my photos. This is then stored in a database and pulled out when required. All the photos are still hosted on flickr though. When you reach a destination page, Barcelona for example, click on an image to view larger versions in a light box.

I’m going to be buying a new camera very soon, so expect the Scotland gallery to start expanding!

    Good work with the Gallery!

Much better picture qualities than on facebook

The picture quality is all down to flickr. When I upload the originals it creates scaled versions of each one at several different sizes. I’m using the small and medium sized photos on here but there are full size versions available too, they just don’t really fit on screen ;)
